Oil Painting

 Another week has just flown by and this week it was oil painting - a new medium for me. 
We were given a large plywood palette and just four colours to work with:

  • Viridian
  • Titanium white
  • Alizarin Crimson and         
  • Yellow Ochre

For once I was totally in my element as seeing and mixing colour has always been something for which I have  a natural eye. The tutor even carted my colourful specimen round the class to demonstrate how many colours could be made from such a potentially unpromising selection

                  

Mixing colours with a knife was fun and by the end of the week I had produced some reasonable work.

             


                     
   
                 
                                

 Apparently it can take up to six weeks for the paint to dry.

 One of the students celebrated her birthday with a traditional sweet from her country - Jalebi - delicious. We are all off to the Indian restaurant on Monday night to celebrate with her and her family.

Next week its figure drawing and portraiture and we had to start by doing blind drawings of people in cafes or the library, We cheated and all went to the local hotel , drank hot chocolate in front of a real fire and did it there with much hilarity as our blind drawings were barely even recognisable as people.

                                                          

We also had to create four creative photographic selfies as a prelude to portraiture. 
         
                             

For the first time I will have a whole day off tomorrow. Hope its not raining

Bullocks Bottom and Boots

Bullock's Bottom and Boots Sue's h usband has brand new RED power sawing boots. I am supposedly working on a project about shoes. I had not been out of the village for eight weeks and the  village is largely closed down until the first of March now that Hogmanay  is done and dusted. The weather has been awful: three named storms,  snow, ice, hail, rain and more snow and rain and hail.  The first dry weekend I escaped to stay with Sue, one of the students who has turned out to be a soul mate. She lives in a very beautiful home with her husband, seven chickens and 64 rare breed sheep on the outskirts of Inverness. Phil h ad been practising his manly moves wearing said boots in the hopes that I was indeed the foot fetishist of his fond imaginings. Freezing Cold Print Week                       Print week went well due in part to the fact all three of our teachers are professional print makers and that we had a professional  printing press in the studio and did not have to resort to potato prints and a spoon to burnish the print onto the paper.  Well okay, in the name of scrupulous honesty I confess I did resort to potato printing actually and  thought it was really rather effective.   We had to come up with our own theme and as I live by the sea in the south of England and I am living on the coast of North West Scotland the beach was my theme.
